Third Degree by Greg Iles

Once again, Natchez native Greg Iles proves himself a master of the Southern Gothic. Third Degree is a potboiler of a novel, careening from totally unbelievable twists to edge-of-your-seat thrills. Iles keeps the action coming as he develops interesting characters and motivation in this nightmare plot.

Laurel Shields has been married to her physician husband for 12 years. She awakes one morning to find him behaving erratically, throwing books from the shelves of his study. She attributes it to the stress of the IRS audit of his medical practice, but soon finds things to be much more complicated than she could ever imagine. Dr. Shields takes her and their two children hostage and the nightmare continues to build.

Iles has written many New York Times Best Sellers, often set in Natchez. While this may not be my favorite of his books, it is exciting and enjoyable and well worth the time it takes to read.
