Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston with Mario Spezi

Best selling thriller author Douglas Preston is better known for his collaborations with Lincoln Child (FBI special agent Aloysius Pendergast series). In Monster of Florence he produces a true crime story that is more exciting than many a best seller.

Preston moved with his wife and family to Florence to write a novel away from the distractions of American life. Instead he became almost obsessed with the case of a serial killer who murdered seven pairs of lovers in the area surrounding Florence. Preston's co-author Mario Spezi is an Italian crime reporter who shared Preston's curiosity about the "Monster." Together they manage to dig deeply enough into the case to have Preston deported and Spezi arrested for interference with the official investigation.

I am a big fan of Preston and Child's Pendergast novels. If anything I enjoyed this book even more, especially the way the investigation plays out against the day-to-day life of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
