Mitch Albom's little fable of a novel begins at what you might think of as the end. "Eddie Maintenance" dies while attempting to rescue a little girl from a damaged amusement park ride. As the head of maintenance at a small amusement pier, Eddie felt that he was unimportant and unnecessary. After he dies, however, he meets five people who help him to understand the where and why of his life on earth.
While the book is mostly predictable and overblown, it presents a worthwhile message about how each person's life is intertwined with every other.
Albom's earlier book, Tuesdays with Morrie, was a runaway best seller.
