The Private Patient by P.D. James

P.D. James' Adam Dalgliesh novels are complex, descriptive and slow-moving. They are perfect for long evenings by the fireplace and delve deeply into character, location and motivation.
The Private Patient is, if anything, even more meditative than the previous Dalgliesh books. Here a noted journalist checks in to an exclusive private hospital set in a colossal British manor house. All goes well with the surgery, but the patient doesn't survive. The journalist's murder brings Dalgliesh and his crew to the manor, where we study the interesting characters in the house and the complex characters of Dalgliesh and his team.
The Private Patient is a perfect book for a rainy evening.
