The world has lost another Mississippi treasure this week with the death of author and Oxford resident Barry Hannah. Hannah's best writing is his short stories which are often wild explorations of the human soul, fueled by guns, booze, religion and sex. While Hannah's characters and situations are extreme, they are complex and often sad explorations of what it means to be truly human.
Hannah's novels feature the same incredible writing, but his plots don't hold together over the long haul. If you haven't read Hannah, start with a story collection such as High Lonesome, but don't ignore the novels because the wonderful writing trumps the poor plotting every time.
Mississippi has some of the best writers in the world. Please enjoy our literary heritage!
