Diana Gabaldon, A Breath of snow and Ashes

A Breath of Snow and Ashes is Diana Gabaldon's 6th Outlander novel. The series is a fun mixture of romance, adventure, history and a bit of science fiction.
Time traveling from the 20th century, Claire Fraser falls in love with and marries Jamie Fraser who lives in pre-revolutionary America. Having this modern perspective makes it easier for Gabaldon to present the sharp differences from the past to our comfortable lives. History is a large part of the books, but there is plenty of romance and adventure as the colonist attempt to create a sustainable future for themselves.
In this book, the American Revolution is about to begin. The Frasers live in the mountains of North Carolina, so they have been isolated from most of the revolutionary tumult. But as the war becomes closer to reality, they find they must choose sides and take a stand.
The book is nearly 1,000 pages, so there is lots of room for detail of everyday life, family melodrama, adventure and exploration. This is a great slow book that will entice you to spend many nights by the fire imagining life in 1776.
