An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943 by Rick Atkinson

An Army at Dawn is a totally engrossing telling of the early North African campaign of World War II. I was not very familiar with the War in North Africa and was surprised to learn that it was during this effort that the United States came into its own as a world power. Atkinson tells a compelling story, combining big picture views with intimate details to present a full picture.
Atkinson is a Pulitzer winning journalist who has written other best selling histories, including The Long Gray Line. An Army at dawn is the first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, a history of World War II in Europe.
