Library Receives Mississippi Arts Commission Grant

From Donna Kenney, Children's Services Coordinator:

The Lincoln County Public Library of Brookhaven has been awarded a $750 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the $1.2 million in grants MAC will award state-wide in 2008-09. “This money will be used to help fund a professional puppet show during the Summer Library Program,” said Donna Kenney, Children’s Librarian. “Without this grant and local donations we could never afford to present this at no charge.”

he grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

“Organizations across the state who receive grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission continue to prove that arts programs are vital to the growth of their area. The grants awarded by the Commission provide funding for the staging of festivals, theatre performances and many other arts-related activities,” said Malcolm White, Executive Director of MAC. “Communities across this state are also learning the affect the arts have of the education of their children. Arts-based activities have a proven positive impact on at-risk youth and children enrolled in after-school programs.”

“Over 500 children in Lincoln County usually enroll in the summer program at the library,” said Ms. Kenney. “We are planning lots of programs to keep the children interested in visiting the library often. It is so important to keep the children reading during the summer so they don’t ‘slide back’ in their skills. For children who may be a little behind in reading skills, this is a perfect time to ‘catch up.’ Just reading a couple of books per week will enable kids to ‘maintain’ over the summer. We hope lots of kids will discover how much fun reading can be.”

MAC is a state agency that serves more than 1.7 million people of the state through grants that support programs to enhance communities; assist artists and arts organizations; promote the arts in education and celebrate Mississippi’s cultural heritage. Established in 1968, MAC is funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment of the Arts, The Wallace Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, Donna & Jim Barksdale, the Phil Hardin Foundation and other private sources. MAC serves as the official grants-making and service agency for the arts in Mississippi.
