Joel Backman is a disgraced Washington power broker serving 20 years in solitary confinement when a pardon is mysteriously granted. Joel is whisked out of prison to Italy, where he begins a new life with a new identity filled with great food, beautiful cities and Italian lessons with a beautiful tutor. Life is not so idyllic, however, since the CIA has set Joel up to be killed.
The Broker is not your typical Grisham thriller. While there are great chases, narrow escapes, high tech gadgets and intrigue, most of the book is devoted to wonderful descriptions of life as an ex-pat in Italy. If you've grown tired of Grisham's old formula, give The Broker a try.
