More Mississippi Writers

Nevada Barr, Anna Pigeon mysteries.

Nevada Barr is one of the best mystery writers writing today. Park Ranger Anna Pigeon is one of the most interesting detectives in any series. Each book is set in a national park and features beautiful descriptions of the park as well as the complex characters thrown together there. Two books feature Mississippi settings, Deep South and Hunting Season (set on the Natchez Trace). Other parks include Glacier (Blood Lure), New York City/Ellis Island (Liberty Falling), Mesa Verde (Ill Wind) and many others. The first Anna Pigeon book was set in the Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas (Track of the Cat).

Barry Hannah, novels and stories.

Barry Hannah can work magic with words. His writings feature some of the most beautiful and poetic passages in American literature. While his best work is in his short stories, his novels are well worth reading. Yonder Stands Your Orphan features a wonderfully freaky cast of characters interacting in a haze of alcohol and violence. He has numerous short story collections.

Lewis Nordan, novels and stories.

Lewis Nordan is probably my favorite Mississippi writer. His "magic realism" incorporates a dreamy sense of fantasy, stark reality and spirit. Wolf Whistle is a meditation on the events surrounding the death of Emmit Till. Lightning Song is the coming of age of 12 year old Leroy Dearman in a world filled with llamas, lightning and Playboy magazine. Welcome to the Arrow-Catcher Fair is a collection of wonderful short stories.
